Feline & Fauna by, Stephen Eichhorn

August 20, 2013

These cat collages are the work of Stephen Eichhorn, a Chicago-based artist. He culls the background imagery from cat books, both vintage and modern, that specialize in a certain brand of portraiture. The elements of fauna, Eichhorn painstakingly trims with his exact-o knife to fit with his subject. The juxtapose of the subject matter and traditional composition force the viewer to re-imagine the convention of the portrait. It's interesting to see this old photographic structure in play, considering we're in the age of media and mass imagery. To see more from Stephen Eichhorn, visit his personal site here. A selection of collages are available as prints here.
